St Patrick’s Catholic Church-Thika Be Merciful As The Father Is

The Church had its beginnings as an outstation of Kalimoni Mission in the year 1933. In its early days, it was located in what is currently Section 9, at the site where the Administration Police camp seats, not far from Mugumoini Primary School. In the 1940s, Rev. Father Virigan, who was based at Kalimoni, served the Church together with Rev. Father Whelan.

Later in the 1950s, Rev. Father Culligan brought together Christians from all communities that lived in Thika, to contribute towards a fund raiser to help build the Church at its current location.

His effort was rewarded with a contribution of Ksh 130 000. The building plans were drawn by an Italian Architect who did it at no fee. The Church was constructed by B.S. Varma of Prakash Building Contractors who were based in Thika.

The construction of the Church began, in earnest, in 1959 and in 1961 it was dedicated by His Grace Archbishop J.J. Mckathy of the Archdiocese of Nairobi. The building was completed in 1962. Over the following years, various Priests have served the church.
